The National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®) introduces the Pool Math™ Workbook, the industry’s first textbook focused solely on making swimming pool and spa calculations easier.
The Pool Math™ Workbook is designed for operators, service technicians, health officials, retail technicians, and renovators who need to perform common math. The Pool Math™ Workbook helps people calculate pool surface area, water volume, chemical dosage amounts, saturation index, filter surface area, flow rate, filter flow rate capacity, turnover rate, heater sizing, spa water draining frequency, make-up water amount, maximum user load, and total dynamic head. “Combining experiences from the world-leading Certified Pool-Spa Operator® training program and an expert review panel, we’ve created a simple, convenient and inexpensive workbook, that truly makes pool math easier to understand,” says Thomas M. Lachocki, Ph.D., CEO for NSPF®. “And, like the CPO® Handbook, this workbook uses full-color throughout to help students visualize concepts.”
“The longer we are out of school, the more basic math becomes a barrier to getting practical answers,” explains Alex Antoniou, Ph.D., NSPF® Director of Educational Programs. “This workbook gives us all a way to practice and check the proper way to do basic pool math,” he adds.
The Pool Math™ Workbook begins with a Basic Math Skills test, which allows the reader to determine basic math knowledge and math ability. The remainder of the book is broken into three parts. Part one, Basic Calculations, reviews how to perform important calculations and provides important conversions including examples of how to get to important answers.
The second and third parts work together. Part two, Sample Problems, contains over 40 pages of math problems, presenting typical calculations to practice. More important “must know” calculations are highlighted in color to separate them from “nice to know” calculations. The third part, Sample Problem Solutions, provides step-by-step answers to solve each problem presented in the second part. If students want to practice, they can practice in part two. If they want to be reminded of how to get the answer, they can review part three.
“Math is painful when we don’t know how. This workbook is like ‘good living’ - it can prevent the pain from coming. It is also like aspirin. If you feel the pain coming, it is good to have in your ‘medicine’ cabinet when you need it,” remarks Lachocki.
